I’m going to go ahead and say it; Newport is one of the most underrated cities in the UK with amazing bike shops, and the surrounding county is filled to the brim with outstanding beauty. The city itself hasn’t always been the best, as someone who was born and who lives here I believe I’m allowed to say that, but in the last decade major improvements have been made to the infrastructure, and it’s something I’ve become hugely thankful for. Not only has day-to-day life improved here, the initiative to make the city a little nicer has made cycling here a whole lot nicer, because as we all know; one of the biggest reasons we cycle is for the view.
But I digress, this new infrastructure has led to a massive boom in cycling in Newport, and that activity has led to a healthy choice of Newport bike shops.
South Wales Cycling Co
With a skilled and knowledgeable staff, this store is Newport’s largest independent bike shop. Plus there are over 150 bikes, including Road, MTB, Commuter, Cyclocross, Hyrbrid, BMX, Folding, Time-Trial, and Electric bikes. They sell bikes from brands including, but not limited to, Merida, LOOK, and Bottecchia, and have a fantastic relationship with the Newport Velodrome. Bike fittings, bike services, cycling gear, and nutritional products are also in-store. This Newport bike shop has a free car park, and is a 5 minute cycle from the town centre, so there’s no real excuse to not go in and at least chat.
You can find them at 45 Caerleon Road, Newport, Gwent, NP19 7BW, or visit their website for a browse of all they have to offer.
As one of the most well known cycling shops in the UK, there’s not much I can tell you about Leisure Lakes you don’t already know. With a plethora of bikes and merchandise on shelves, you can buy almost everything the cycling-loving part of your brain can imagine.
However, as the Newport bike store is in an unpredictable location, you may not have known we have a store here. I recently only discovered this hidden gem myself, so now you know where it is I guess it’s time you popped your head in and prepared for the upcoming spring, that time of year where the excuse ‘it’s too cold to ride’ loses it’s validity.
You can find the Newport branch at 109 Glasllwch Crescent, Highcross Road, Newport, Gwent, NP10 9SG. For more information on the Newport branch and for a catalogue of what Leisure Lakes has to offer you can swing by the main site.
This is another one of those ‘there’s nothing I can tell you’ stores, as Halfords probably has everything you’ll need to get out on the bike. But it also suffers an unfortunate stigma, in the cycling community, as it can seem as if the cycling gear comes in second to everything else the store offers, but this just simply isn’t true. Halfords is one of the only places you can buy the bikes designed by pro cyclist Chris Boardman, so you can’t say you don’t get quality. And it doesn’t stop there; you can buy anything from Cyclocross bikes to Fixies across a multitude of respected and reliable brands. You also get a bit more for your buck, than at other large cycling retailers, when it comes to maintenance kits and service tools.
The Newport store is located at Unit 5, 28 Newport East Retail Park, Newport, NP20 2NW, and you can find out more about contacting the branch here. Otherwise you can visit the main website to glimpse the full range Halfords has to offer.
This is one of the most recognisable Newport bike shops, selling all kinds of cycling apparel from bikes to accessories, as well as skateboards and scooters. They offer Road, MTB, BMX and Children’s bikes, and stock Dawes, ClaudButler, Blank, WethePeople, Charge, SplitSecondImports, and Madison bikes. It’s also a family run business, with friendly and helpful who are happy to help with anything from picking a bike, to looking as good as you can on the bike.
Furthermore there is a close relationship with Newport Phoenix Cycling Club, who you can read about on our Newport Cycling Clubs page.
You can find them at 422 Chepstow Rd, Newport, NP19 8JH, or go to this cycle shop’s website for more information on their services and products.
